No really, it was nothing. It’s a pleasure.

  2. So, how many references are you getting from StumbleUpon – or is that even possible to find out?!

(And congrats! … I hope the site stays up…) Maybe you can sue them for bringing you too much traffic. :P

  3. Markus,

Only on a monthly basis. So far this month over 40.000. It may sound odd, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to limit SU referrals. I like the success but I can’t keep upgrading every month…

  4. Imagine what kind of ads Adword put on here…

  5. Jeroen,

If you’re having to upgrade your plan each month (money…down…drain… o.o), limiting that which gives you the most referrals (probably SU by a LONG shot) doesn’t sound odd.

On the other hand, Google ads don’t seem like a bad idea. But I’ve never read into the fine print of those things.

  6. Oh wow, now I have to scrounge up something to donate. I promise I will. I’ve loved your comics since I got hit with a link in SU some months ago.

As for the bandwidth costs, I’ve already seen suggestions about using a different file type, but could it also be possible to trim some of the code on the backside? It may only amount to a few bytes less per person, but when you’re getting 15,000 in two days and over 40,000 a month those few bytes would add up.

Like the mouseover titles on your links, aesthetically pleasing, but could trim off some of the bandwidth load until you figure out some way to get some more money or lower the freakish amount of SU referalls.

  7. Loong comment coming up…

    @NimnimJohn & Markus:

I’ve already decreased the number of posts on the main page to 5, for all the stumblers landing there. Converting all the gifs to pngs would be a hell of a job, especially because I’d have to change all the image links in every post. The mouseover stuff is all part of the WordPress theme I’m using, I don’t even want to start messing with that.

Anyway, it would only shave off a fraction of the traffic, and I need a more permanent solution for the future. I’ve seen SU-storms before and usually they die down after two or three days. This one’s been raging for over a week now. Right now I’m thinking about adding ads anyway, and moving to a different host. Anyone here who’s migrated WordPress blogs before?

On the BRIGHT side… I’ve taken a good look at my stats again. Yes, SU visitors take up more than half of the traffic. BUT about 40% consists of people who’ve bookmarked me or entered the adress directly. So I guess that means I’m…

    …actually popular?

    :-O

  8. Yes, yes you are.

I landed here a few months ago by stumbling and haven’t left since. You make a great comic that everyone can relate to. I been coming here everyday since I first found the site. I love it.
I don’t really have any advice for you about this particular problem that hasn’t already been covered above. But I hope you find something, so you can keep making this amazing comic.

  9. :P,

I guess you actually are popular. :P I Stumbled Upon (sorry!) the comic that had the tagline of the site around June. Or July. Summer. I haven’t stopped coming back.

Sure, converting everything would be a pain. And that was probably a bad idea. But what about all the new ones that haven’t been posted yet? Yet another thought. (I don’t know much about GIF and PNG, except that the GIF -> PNG ended up smaller. Not sure about compatibilities and whatnot.)

  10. Jeroen,

2007 moet nog even wachten – nu eerst slaap !

    Sterkte !
